A Strategic Expansion Shaping the Future of Emergency Care
Little Company of Mary’s Emergency Department underwent a multi‑phased expansion and renovation that doubled the department’s size to meet rising demand and improve patient throughput. Completed in early 2022, the project delivered 30,300 sf of upgraded space, including 29 patient beds, exam rooms, an imaging suite, behavioral health space, nurse stations, a reception area, and a fast‑track unit designed to reduce wait times.
The project was initially planned as five phases, but through close coordination and communication with hospital staff, the team consolidated the work into three phases. This approach reduced both time and cost, returning savings to the hospital. All construction was completed adjacent to an active Emergency Department, requiring continuous coordination and adjustments to maintain uninterrupted patient care and departmental operations.
Phase 1
Phase 1 began July 2019, and includes excavation, foundation work, and construction of the west‑side addition. The ambulance bay remained operational through controlled access and temporary separation from the work zone. This 10,000 sf expansion includes:
- 10,000 sf expansion
- New canopy and ambulance bay
- Behavioral health suite
- A new electrical closet.
Phase 2
Phase 2 connects the new structure to the east side of the department and permanently relocates the ambulance bay to the west side. The west side also serves as the temporary main entrance. Phase 2 features:
- New 95th Street main entrance
- Waiting areas
- An imaging suite with X‑ray and CT
- The first portion of the fast‑track treatment area
Phase 3 & 4
Phases 3 and 4 focused on interior upgrades and final departmental expansion, including:
- Permanent ambulance entrance
- EMS and police offices
- Decontamination room
- Second nurse station
- Additional patient rooms
- Completion of the fast‑track unit
