Located in the heart of the Gold Coast, the historic Cedar Hotel, built in 1922, has taken on a new identity. This 167,200 sf, 18-story hotel features 180 guest rooms, fourth floor rooftop terrace with pool overlooking State Street, three restaurants with an open kitchen main restaurant, three bars, and an open three-story lobby. The lobby features unique graphics, a fireplace surrounded with Italian tile, dark cedar herringbone patterned flooring and custom chandelier. The fourth floor features two meeting rooms, a board room, office space and ballroom with mirrored walls, and custom chandeliers all leading out to the terrace. The terrace features planters, pavers, landscaping and fabulous views of the city skyline.

Robust mechanical systems for the multiple full-service kitchens, restaurants and guestrooms required a very detailed coordination by our VDC department. With input from Power MEP Specialists during the 10-month process, our team worked with key subcontractors and equipment manufacturers to ensure size, placement and logistics of equipment.

Careful Coordination for Historic Façade

In order to preserve the old hotel’s historic façade, the east face of existing brick and terracotta was catalogued, removed, and reinstalled. The final effect is a combination of the traditional, historic façade with a new modern glass curtainwall system enclosure that spans from the 4th to 18th floors. Approximately 80% of the 1920’s terracotta pieces were salvaged and restored for reuse. New pieces were remade from glass fiber reinforced concrete molds and blended into the original façade.
