In conjunction with the United Terminal 1 Roof Rehabilitation, this project upgraded 72 HVAC units serving more than 730,000 sf of space across Concourses B and C in Terminal 1, including active dining, retail, and passenger areas. The work was performed entirely within operating terminal and back-of-house environments for United, requiring careful phasing and coordination to minimize disruption.

New equipment included fan-powered boxes, VAVs, CAVs, associated electrical components, and a new DDC controls system to replace the existing pneumatic controls. The team also replaced and enhanced ceilings at all gates, improving both performance and aesthetics in heavily trafficked gate areas.

Existing Conditions

This further encompassed a complete retrofit of many of the air handling units (AHUs) serving Terminal 1. Instead of fully replacing the larger AHUs, the team temporarily removed sections of the existing exterior housing to access the interior, then replaced the heating and cooling coils, filters, controls, and other internal components before restoring the original housing and returning each unit to service.
